Career background / updated October 23, 2026

Jim Butcher, PhD MBA

PhD: honorary distinction in Martial Sciences. MBA, University of Phoenix. Education details →

Jim Butcher began training at Bushi Ban Clear Lake in September 2002. His background connects martial-arts practice, teaching, school leadership, strength breaking and service to the Sport Karate Museum. He reports seventh-degree recognition in 2025 through Sport Karate Museum and American Fitness and Martial Art (AFMA).

Training began as a personal pursuit and became a family connection when Jim's father joined him. The emphasis grew beyond rank: practice consistently, teach something useful, and help the next student develop confidence.

Breaking and recognition

The 2013 USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame certificate names Jimmy Butcher as Breaking Master of the Year, dated August 10, 2013. AFMA's contemporary announcement also identifies Jim as a Santa Fe instructor and inductee. This is distinct from Black Belt magazine's Hall of Fame.

Jim separately reports Celebrity Martial Arts Hall of Fame recognition in 2025 and 2026. Both years are retained; ceremony records, categories and the nature of repeat recognition remain to be documented. They are not combined with the 2013 award.

Strength breaking and seminar work are part of his background. Specific world-record totals and tournament placements are not claimed here without matching event records. A November 2013 certificate records a coach/athlete appointment to the organization styled the Official U.S. National Martial Arts Team; it does not establish Olympic affiliation, international participation or a medal.

Teaching and school leadership

Jim's teaching philosophy emphasizes confidence, discipline, achievable goals and lifelong development, including helping children find their voice. His historical resume lists a Santa Fe master-instructor role from November 2009, and AFMA's 2013 announcement identifies him as a Santa Fe instructor. Full tenure and current teaching status are not established by those records.

His background also includes historical Santa Fe school ownership and operations. Fitness and safety training appearing in older records is not presented as current certification.

Museum service and preserving the history

The profile records museum-support work from 2013 onward, historical advisor and History General billing, and participation in museum-development planning in 2026. These records describe service and planning, not museum ownership, a completed new facility or a legal officer appointment.

Jim is working with Professor Gary Lee on a national sport-karate history project. The book remains in review; it is not listed as an already published work. Visit Sport Karate Museum Archives →
