About me

A little about me.
And what matters.

I am Jim Butcher. My interests run from business and martial arts to music, faith, writing, and the questions that keep me learning.

Build a useful life.
Leave something worth keeping.

I do not see work, family, faith, and creativity as completely separate lives. They are different ways of asking the same question: what am I doing with the time and opportunities I have been given?

I want the answer to be practical. Keep a promise. Help someone understand a difficult decision. Teach something useful. Make room for the people who matter. Create something that may outlast the moment.

The meaning behind our mark

Learn. Create.
Leave something good.

The open book represents learning and writing. The flame stands for faith and purpose. The quill is for creative expression, and the leafy sprig is for stewardship, growth, and what we pass on.

These interests share one home here. This is a newly created personal emblem, not inherited heraldry or an official seal.

Faith, with humility.

Faith is part of how I make sense of life and how I think about responsibility. I value prayer, reflection, and the willingness to ask an honest question. Learning more should make me more thoughtful, not more certain that I have nothing left to learn.

That is the spirit behind Faith & Scholar: take the reading seriously, stay close to the sources, respect the differences between traditions, and leave room for deeper understanding.

Family and the ordinary days.

A worthwhile ambition should fit the life it is meant to serve. I do not want a full calendar to crowd out attention, kindness, rest, or time with family. The small, ordinary moments are not an interruption to a meaningful life. They are much of its substance.

To me, progress should leave the people around us better supported, not simply leave us busier.

Stewardship instead of hype.

I think of money, time, knowledge, and opportunity as things to steward. Money is a useful tool, not the measure of a person's worth and not the master of a household. Good decisions need to make sense beyond the immediate result: for family, reputation, peace of mind, and the long horizon.

My work in financial services has made practical questions important to me. What is actually needed? What are the tradeoffs? What can be supported by facts? What is the next responsible step?

Practice, patience, and passing it on.

Martial arts gives discipline a very concrete meaning: show up, pay attention, practice again, and treat people with care. I value the teaching side as much as the pursuit of improvement. A lesson matters when someone else can carry it forward.

Always a student.

I enjoy learning across subjects rather than keeping every interest in its own box. Business can teach something about people. History can change how a question looks. A software project can expose the difference between an appealing idea and something that actually works.

New technology, including AI, is useful when it helps us think, build, or learn. It is still a tool. Claims need evidence, mistakes need to be acknowledged, and a promising experiment is not the same thing as a proven result.

Making room for creativity.

Sometimes a thought belongs in an essay. Sometimes it becomes a lyric, a poem, a story, or a song. I want this website to have room for all of those forms, without pretending that every idea is finished or every draft is ready for a final judgment.

Music and writing are ways of paying attention: to a question, a memory, a hope, or something that is hard to say any other way.

Martial arts background

Jim Butcher began training at Bushi Ban Clear Lake in September 2002. His background connects martial-arts practice, teaching, school leadership, strength breaking and service to the Sport Karate Museum. He reports seventh-degree recognition in 2025 through Sport Karate Museum and American Fitness and Martial Art (AFMA).

The 2013 USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame certificate records Breaking Master of the Year. Later Celebrity Martial Arts Hall of Fame recognition in 2025 and 2026 is reported by Jim, with ceremony details still to be documented. Historical teaching, school leadership and museum service are described with their evidence limits.

A few things about my working life.

I am based in the Houston area. My professional background includes commercial lending, receivables financing, business development, and real estate. Martial-arts instruction, creative work, faith study, and independent AI-assisted software projects are also part of this collection.

My working collection also includes learning software, everyday tools, original book and game projects, music and lyric preservation, and applied computational studies. I want useful outcomes, with prototypes, source-reported results, and unfinished work described honestly. The combined portfolio brings those areas together.

The CV page gives the dated professional and education details. The R640 & AI portfolio keeps project evidence and limitations with the work. This page is the more personal introduction: the outlook behind those interests.

Portrait studies.

Two creative portrait studies from my existing image collection. These are creative interpretations of my likeness, not photographs documenting a cafe visit or a particular walk.
